Water is polluted, oil raise warning in Coffeyville, Kansas
COFFEYVILLE, Kansas - As Coffeyville inhabitants are going on moving since a week passed after flood endangered their houses and offices, the authorities warn of health troubles from polluted water and their consequences.
Ball-fields, homes and lawns of the east city’s part are now covered with black oil that was a part of 71,400 gallons, leaked from Coffeyville Resources refinery not long before, when there was a disorder in refinery’s function during its closing when the flood over the Verdigris River began.
You can also feel the smell of oil there.
Authorities have again allowed the access to the conveniences for people who came back to their houses at the beginning of the week and then denied the access for the territory exposed to pollution again, with 16,000 of the east city’s part. The reason was emergency workers complaints for diarrhea and rashes.
After that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency claimed that two floodwater specimens from Coffeyville revealed that the concentration of fecal coliform microorganism in water was 130 times as mush as required. This microorganism can be the reason of vomiting, diarrhea, fever and stomachache, according to the organization. An injury or a cut, contacting with this microorganism can cause redness, fever and swelling, as EPA reported.
“We have some cases among the inhabitants of Coffeyville”, marked Sue Casteel, environmental specialist at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. “We have seen that people who contacted this oil at Katrina were exposed to rashes and their skin was red and flaky”.
